Tinnitus Clinic

Specialist Assessment and Tinnitus Management Programmes.

Tinnitus is the awareness of a sound/s in your ears or head that has no external source. Tinnitus UK estimate as many as 1 in 7 adults are aware of tinnitus at some point during their lives. Sounds can be constant or pulsatile. Some people have one tone while others experience many. In some cases tinnitus may be a recurrent hymn or song. This 'musical tinnitus' is common in old adults who are socially isolated

The impact of tinnitus can vary from individual to individual. For some, tinnitus is just a background noise while for others it can have significant impacts on areas such as sleep, concentration, mood and lifestyle. Some may also experience sensitivity to external sound. Causes of tinnitus awareness include changes in hearing, noise exposure, stress and anxiety, lifestyle changes and some medical conditions and treatments.

This variability in causes and also impact mean that there is no one 'cure' for tinnitus awareness. Tinnitus is better considered as a symptom of other factors. Soundful Silence offers a comprehensive audiological assessment to investigate causes of tinnitus but also give you time to discuss your tinnitus experience and how it impacts on you. This allows us to tailor management to your particular difficulties.

Tinnitus management is targeted at promoting 'habituation' to the tinnitus sound. This is your brain's natural sound filtering system.  This process can be aided by treating any underlying hearing impairment with hearing aids, reducing day-day awareness with Tinnitus Retraining Devices, calming the body's physical stress responses with relaxation techniques and getting better sleep through improved sleep hygiene and sleep counselling. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has also been shown to be effective at reducing tinnitus associated distress, improving coping and overall quality of life.

Tinnitus awareness often seems out with the suffers control. Soundful Silence can help you to take back control and focus on the things that matter.
