Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT for management of Tinnitus, Sound Sensitivity conditions such as Hyperacusis and Misophonia and the impact of hearing impairment on mood and wellbeing

Cognitive behavioural therapy is a psychotherapy based around the principles that your thoughts, behaviours, emotions and physical wellbeing are all linked. The way you think about a situation or stimulus will impact on how you behave towards it or as a consequence of it. For example If you are think that your tinnitus will get worse if you  are exposed to noise you will potentially avoid places with background noise as a result. This has potentially negative consequences because tinnitus is more noticeable in quieter places and you potentially narrow your social interactions and other wellbeing improving activities. Additionally if you are worried about your tinnitus getting worse over time you will 'keep an eye on it' to monitor for this happening. This monitoring can lead to distorted perception which can actually maintain awareness of tinnitus when your brain would have otherwise filtered it out. We know that not everyone who experiences tinnitus is bothered by it but for others it can lead to anxiety, poor sleep and negative changes to their lifestyles. This may in part be due to their beliefs about it and changes they have made as a consequence

CBT techniques can be used to modify thoughts and behaviours as a result of tinnitus awareness. Alongside the use of relaxation techniques to turn down the physical reactions it has been shown to significantly reduce the impact of tinnitus awareness on quality of life and aid habituation. At Soundful Silence we also utilise our Audiology know-how combining CBT with the use of sound therapy and hearing aids if necessary

CBT techniques can also be successfully used in the management of sound sensitivity conditions such as Hyperacusis or Misophonia and has for a long time be successfully used in the treatment of anxiety disorders and low mood. Both of which are linked with tinnitus and sound sensitivity.

Soundful Silence offer CBT programmes tailored to your specific goals for therapy that are conducted virtually so can fit in around your daily life. CBT is a practical therapy where you will learn techniques for changing your reactions to tinnitus, sound or life's stresses for the better.
